Chora Makra: A Contemplation on Emptiness

Our English bibles talk about that place where the Prodigal Son went as the "distant country": “The younger son left his Father and went to a distant country to squander his wealth.” (in more poetic Filipino, it says: "At hindi nakaraan ang maraming araw, ay tinipong lahat ng anak na bunso ang ganang kaniya, at naglakbay sa isang malayong lupain; at doo'y inaksaya ang kaniyang kabuhayan sa palunging pamumuhay."). Relationship Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness

What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? Today, I’m going to talk about a different kind of uncluttering–inner...

Changes and Rebirth

have been born and reborn in so many ways the past years that sometimes, I look at myself and realise I do not recognise this person anymore. If you asked me in 2000, if I knew in 20 years that I would be in Singapore, with my wife and 2 kids, I’d laugh at you and call you crazy. In October 2000, I was a Jesuit novice about to enter a 30 day silent retreat. If my present self came back in time to 2010, and told me whether I can imagine being in the restaurant business or the f&b...

Gain The World But Do Not Lose Your Soul

The goal of every life is to be successful without losing integrity. When you have found your success, ironically that is when the real trouble begins. Life is not as easy and as simple as forsaking the world and gaining your soul anymore. Our life in the marketplace and the world of work points us to the possibility of great success and the potential to do great, life-giving and meaningful work. But we’ve heard of idealistic Politicians getting eaten up by the system, or of Doctors gone bad, or what of good Lawyers giving in to a corrupt justice system....
